I am so excited to have you as a co-author on this book. Here is the great thing, this won't require a lot of work.
First some housekeeping (use this as a checklist):
Please reply to the email we just sent you, and let us know you got it and that you are as excited as we are.
Second, you will receive a second email from
eSignatures.io for a quick eSign of the publishing agreement. Please sign and return right away.
Provide us with your headshot ASAP. Keep in mind most authors will send us a professional headshot, square or circle, with just the head in the middle. It should be 300 DPI preferably 500x500 (or larger).
Silvia will be helping you get all your content together for the book. She will be your main point of contact.
I tend to be a little hands off on these things, but many times people want a little guidance and rightfully so.
Here is how I want you to envision your chapter, because this is what has worked extremely well in the past.
What is the one thing (or habit) you believe people should know about in hopes of success as an entrepreneur?
Just jot it down.
Now take that idea, and write down the story of how you discovered it. You will not believe how much your story will help the reader learn something that you know. It is ok to be specific to your niche or as general as you want to be.
Here is a simple framework on how to format your chapter:
Tell the story of how you learned this principle or habit.
Explain what the habit is.
How can the reader implement it?
Summarize it with a moral to your story.
Seems too simple? It works (once you get going you are going to complain about needing more words (but you can’t have any!).
As Mark Twain said, “If I had more time, I would have written a shorter letter.”
It is human nature to worry about what everyone else is writing, or if there is overlap and such.
But because we are using your story, you could literally write about the exact same topic as someone else, and it would be totally appropriate.
From our end, we will make sure there isn’t too much overlap. You should also know that you are 100% qualified to write on this topic.
Be unique and be you. And there are a few reasons we do not want authors sharing their stories with each other until the book is done. It isn’t because we enjoy being super secretive. It is more along the lines of getting feedback from too many people or places. It is also about not getting critiques from anyone who isn’t aware of the book in its entirety.
If you feel you need to run your idea by us, send an email to Silvia. But be assured you are in good hands, and if any chapters need tweaking or more unique spin, we will let you know and get it taken care of.
I am so looking forward to your chapter!
Here are some of the guidelines we have developed over the last few years that will make our books as awesome as possible. They are mostly centered around creating a consistent look and feel of the book, as well as a centralized process for the chapters.
CHAPTERS
Chapters should be no more than 2000 words.
We are creating a Kindle Version as well as a paperback.
With an anthology like this, we need to have consistent and common look at feel.
We will be formatting the books (using Vellum restricts us the way we like it to) to a single look and feel.
This means:
The best chapters are mostly text paragraphs, without lots of bold, headers etc.
We will be formatting everything into either text or subheads (if you want a bold header or title to a section you can bold and we will make it a subhead)
We do not allow any images (unless pre-approved) except your headshot.
We can't include any special formatting.
If you need to use bullets or a numeric list, you may go one level deep (no multi-level bulleting).
Chapter Titles
Feel free to name your chapter (though we may rename it for consistency)
3 Word Chapter Titles work best
You may leave it blank if you simply want us to name the chapter title
Editing
At some point after your chapter is turned in (most likely 60 days later), you will receive word that your chapter has been edited and we need you to approve the edits.
You will need gmail account for approving edits from our editor (the edits are completed in Google Docs). This can be done from any computer with internet access.
There is one pass on approvals.
We automatically approve all small edits going forward. You can send us your chapter in any format you like, but we will put it in Google Docs and carry it from there to publishing.
Headshots
We need a square image (300 DPI) 500x500 or larger for your headshot.
Any headshots that are low quality will not be included (we put these on your chapter heading).
Bios
For your chapter, should be a one sentence bio and a link (optional) to where people can find you.
Here is mine:
Ray is a USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author, entrepreneur and founder of The Co-Author Project. You can reach Ray at raybrehm.com.
You may also share something free with the reader (for optins) here. You can use a longer bio when you set up your Author Central Author Page (if you don't already have one).
Only one link can be provided, the best one is usually your personal web page.
What if you don't have a background that makes you an expert for this book?
When you are sharing your experience or habits (for example, talking about wealth), you don't need a PHD. You are just sharing what you do in life to be successful. Kind of like the Chicken Soup for The Soul books. You are sharing your experience. Remember: If you have figured something out in life that works for you, you are qualified to write about it.
Amazon
We list all authors on the Kindle Edition only.
On Amazon, Paperback and Hardcover only allow 10 authors, so mine is the only one we list on those. The effect is the same though. Additionally, on the physical versions, we list all the authors on the back cover (for aesthetics).
If you view the Kindle book from the Amazon App on your phone (many phones will default to this), Amazon only shows the first 6 authors. That does not mean your name is not there, but you may have to use a browser if you are "trying to show someone your book so they can see your name"
We do not provide any copies (as explained on the sales page). Authors will need to purchase direct from Amazon (we push the rate down as low as we can based on Amazon's cost to print). Most authors prefer the option to purchase the amount they need rather than us charge more for a fixed amount.
Also, we do not do any "author copies at author rates." Even though the publisher can get copies for a slight discount via Amazon KDP, it costs more in the end to get them to other authors with shipping and handling. We may add a more expensive tier in
Some Thoughts
Your chapter is not a sales letter. You are sharing a story, wisdom and experience.
All communications should go through Silvia (to make sure nothing gets lost....it has in the past when sent to me). :)
Though I send some emails, most communications will be via Silvia.
We tend to take a hands off approach. That means we will contact you if we need something. We have a long runway (to make this simple and easy for everyone), but if you don't hear from us, it doesn't mean we aren't busy working on things.
We love the community of contributors we are building, some are already doing some joint ventures together. However, one thing we discourage is getting or giving feedback on individual chapters. We are building a team and relationships here for the long term, well beyond this book.
So I am always looking out for who we bring into the fold (on your behalf as well as mine). The result will always be an incredible group of people. Thanks for your indulging me on this topic!
ACTION REQUIRED:
Author Name Here is an easy request.
What is the exact presentation of your author name for our book?
Answer it here:
Amazon does not provide fields for middle name (or initial) or suffix (ie. IV). Add your middle initial, if you choose to use one, in the first name field and your suffix in the last name field (separate from first and last name via spaces) - (Also, Amazon does not allow commas).
THERE WILL BE NO MORE AUTOMATED EMAILS
To keep things simple, please get us your chapter by emailing it to [email protected]
